I am always on the lookout for new cycling-related products and on a recent trip to the grocery store I ran across PowerBar Performance Energy Blends. This product is a fruit-based energy food that is aimed at endurance athletes (runners, swimmers, cyclists) who are seeking quick energy from natural ingredients. The package has an easy-open twist top and you can reseal the package if you don’t want to consume it all at the same time. At five inches tall by three inches wide the package is rather bulky, but you should be about to put a couple of these in your jersey pocket. This product is available in two flavors: Banana Blueberry and Apple Mango Strawberry.
The good news is that the PowerBar Performance Energy Blends are perfect for health-conscience athletes. One package has 80 calories with 21 grams of carbohydrates and one gram of dietary fiber. This product is gluten-free has no artificial colors or flavors. The ingredients list for the Apple Mango Strawberry flavor includes: Dual Source Energy Blend (Apples, Mango Puree [Mango Puree Concentrate, Water], Dextrose, Strawberry Puree), and less than 2% of: Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol Acetate).
The bad news is that the texture of this product makes it impossible for me to consume them. Anyone who has ever met my wife will tell you that she treats me far better than I deserve! Not only does she keep my bike clothing washed and in perfect condition, but she also makes most of our meals entirely from scratch—she even makes her own applesauce! Unfortunately, the PowerBar Performance Energy Blends do not taste like natural applesauce or anything even close—they taste like baby food! If you can get over the whole “baby food” thing then you might enjoy this product, but I just can’t cut it.
PowerBar Performance Energy Blends retail for under $2 per package and if you can’t find them at your local bike shop try Wal-Mart or Amazon.com.
