Lid Lights (Product Review and Giveaway)

I love riding my bike at night. With two bright headlights in the front and a pair of high-powered taillights in the back I am kind of hard to miss on most roads. However, one of the most common forms of bicycle accidents involve side impact—and headlights and taillights do very little to protect you from this kind of collision. The folks at Lid Lights recently sent me one of their new LED helmet lights to try out and I was really impressed with what they’ve put together. If you like riding your bike at night then keep reading—you might even be lucky enough to win a free set of Lid Lights (see details below).

Lid Lights consist of a pair of 12″ long flexible LED lights that attach to your bicycle or ski helmet with 3M adhesive tape (it comes pre-attached to the back of the light strips). If these strips are too long for your helmet (and they might be if you are putting them on a child’s helmet) then you can trim them down to size with just a pair of scissors (complete directions are given on the company website). Since these lights attach to the side of your helmet it makes it easier for cars to see from the side. In addition, helmet lights are usually about two feet higher off the ground than most taillights—and this also makes it easier for folks to see you!

Powered by a single 9-volt battery

The LED lights are incredibly bright and are powered by a single 9-volt battery. The whole unit only weights 3 ounces and the battery unit attaches to your helmet with a piece of Velcro (included). Typical battery life for this product is around 15 to 20 hours of continuous use. I would suggest you use rechargeable batteries—they won’t last as long between charges, but they are a lot more cost-effective.

An easy to use switch controls the blinking pattern

Lid Lights are available in two versions: one with a static light (always on) and a blinking version. The static light retails for $25 and the blinking version is $35. In my opinion the blinking version is the only way to go—blinking lights make you a lot more visible to motorists than an “always on” light. The blinking lights are controlled by a small switch so you can choose from 25 or so different blinking patterns. Lid Lights are available in several colors, including: Blue, Pink, Orange, Green, White, Yellow and Red.

The bottom line: If you ride your bike at night these lights are a no-brainer. Buy a cheap helmet and put a pair of blinking Lid Lights on them. I use very expensive helmets during my daylight rides (both for the ventilation and cool design). However, when you ride at night you don’t usually have to worry as much about ventilation and since no one can actually see the helmet you might as well just go with a cheap one!     I was going to wait a year before trying to win anything else, but this contest hit me where my heart is… You see, my mom is an alien. This may sound odd, but that stuff, in Men In Black, about the aliens living among us? Yeah, that’s real – but they’re not all weird looking, they kind of look like us… So in ’67 my mom’s UFO crashed and she was almost killed. She’s got a bit of a lead foot for a woman and burned out her 476 year power source in 1,283 days (a new record by the way)… Anywho, she met my earthling dad immediately thereafter and decided to skip the shuttle ride back to the transport that had come to rescue her and three other crashed aliens (Alien Engine Corporation [AEC] is facing several alien lawsuits btw) because she’d met my smokin’ hot stud of a dad and, uh, how to put it mildly, I was a bun in the oven. So anyway, my alien mom is really home sick so if I had those lights and could ride by her house at night with just the right flashing sequence (after some exhaustive research they have just the one preprogrammed) on my melon protector, she might feel a little less homesick and stop blubbering herself to sleep at night… Please help my ET mom feel like she can phone home, mister. Thanks.

    (PS I do not ride at night and therefore don’t need the lights, the story just popped in my head as I was reading so I wanted to share it anyway. Please give the lights to another who could use them. Thanks, Jim)

    I rarely ride at night (read: I think I’ve ridden once) because Lincoln drivers tend to have it out for cyclists during the day–I cannot imagine what kind of hostility might awaken when night falls.

    HOWEVER, this year I’ve resolved to ride a lot more–and where I live, the weather is pretty miserable in the summers during the day (hot humid). Also, I have wanted to participate in something that the Great Plains Bike Club calls the “Nacho Ride”–a ride ten miles out of town on a gravel rails-to-trails path to a bar that serves cheap Tacos/Nachos which more than 200 cyclists participate in every Tuesdsay. I have always golfed on Tuesday nights, but not this year! I can finally do the Nacho Ride, but it involves riding part of the way at night. Here’s why I need the lights:

    1. Now that my asthma is finally closer to being under control, I can finally start riding outside again.
    2. The Nacho Ride is a twenty mile round tripper, but the ride doesn’t start until 5:30-6:00pm. I wouldn’t return until after dark–and can you imagine how amazingly cool I would be blinking in the dark, riding on a gravel trail through the canopy of a used-to-go-railroad trail cutting through farm fields all along the way? Why, I’d be the envy of everyone–and I could be an awesome ambassador for bike safety, not to mention the coolness factor of the blinkies.
    3. I want to start riding the Jamaica Trail (another rails to trails) that runs from Lincoln south (to Beatrice about 46 miles one way) before the sun comes up so that I can enjoy the wildlife along the lightly traveled trail. These lights would make me feel more confident doing so.
    4. Finally, I quit commuting to work when the sun falls too quickly in the sky. Most of my commute is on residential streets or bike trails. . . I would just feel more confident blinking brightly along the way. It would eliminate the last of my excuses.

      Way to keep riding, even with asthma! I too have suffered with it forever, but since biking took over more of my life I found it has actually helped with asthma. I always have my puffer with me but can’t remember the last time I actually used it after a ride. In winter I wear a face mask, which really helps, even when temps are several degrees above freezing.
      Great you can get into biking more, keep it up!

        Thanks for the tip about the mask. I wonder if wearing it during the worst of allergy season might help. Luckily, mine is seasonal!

    That is a great idea but what I need is a lighted nuclear waste symbol. That should keep cars from getting too close.

    I love these lights and would also love to win a set! I work in the golf course business and regularly commute to work on my recumbent. We start work @ 6:00am, so I am always riding in the dark on my way in, when those on the road are usually less than fully alert. I do have bright head and tail lights, but every little bit helps, especially being lower on the Slipstream.

    Love the lights! Wonder if they would work on your top tube instead of helmet, then you don’t have to wear the battery and switch (even though it’s light). Even cooler, a set on the forks, and a set on the rear seatstays!

    Being Canadian, I’m not elligible to win, unless you’re willing to ship to Pembina ND, an hour from me, with parcel service. However, being Canadian and a winter rider, I spend most of my commuting time from October thru March in the dark! I bought the Planet Bike Turbo II rear light last fall based on your own product review and blinded my friend who rode home behind me! Agreed, side lights definitely up the safety factor, so this would be the perfect thing for me! I also use a cheapo helmet with less venting for winter, we must think alike.

    Anyway, keep up the great reviews!

    This is something I have never seen before. My professional career is in safety in the work place. I am also a firefighter/EMT. I would love to win this and promote it to the children when we discuss safety to children within the community. If it goes over well, maybe we can use these as giveaways! Our Childers safety always comes first! Remember: if you rub a firemans helmet, it just right squirt you in the eye!

    I would like a set of these, due to the fact that I ride a recumbent tadpole trike. Which is lower than the conventional road bicycle. And, by adding these to my helmet would greatly improve the visibility level for the vehicles around me.
